Pakistan Football’s Star Trio Join International Club: Major Boost for National Talent

In a historic moment for Pakistan’s football landscape, three prominent national team stars have officially completed their transfers to an international club. On January 16, 2026, it was confirmed that the trio has signed with Brothers Union FC, one of the most prestigious and historic clubs in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
This move is seen as a major milestone, providing Pakistani players with much-needed exposure in a competitive professional league outside their home country.
Meet the Trio
The three players, all regulars for the Pakistan National Team (Shaheens), bring a mix of defensive solidity and attacking flair to the Dhaka-based club:
- Abdullah Shah (Center-Back): A towering presence in defense, the 24-year-old has been a mainstay for the national team. Known for his aerial strength and leadership, Shah previously played for WAPDA and has experience in the Maldives and Afghanistan leagues.
- Shayak Dost (Winger/Left-Back): One of Pakistan’s most versatile and pacey players. Dost is known for his ability to beat defenders on the wing and deliver pinpoint crosses. He joins after a successful stint with Adalat Farah FC.
- Omar Rao (Right-Back): An experienced campaigner with over 20 international caps. Rao provides defensive stability and is known for his overlapping runs and stamina.
About Brothers Union FC
Founded in 1949, Brothers Union is based in the Gopibagh area of Dhaka. Known as “The Oranges,” the club has a rich history, including winning the Bangladesh top-flight league in 2003–04. By signing three Pakistani internationals at once, the club is signaling its intent to challenge for the title in the 2026 season.
The Growing “Pak-Bangla” Football Connection
While this trio successfully moved to Dhaka, the transfer window wasn’t without its hurdles for others. Midfielder Alamgir Ghazi was also reportedly in talks with Bangladeshi clubs (including Bangladesh Police FC), but the deal unfortunately collapsed due to a dispute over agent commissions.
However, the trend of Pakistani players moving to Bangladesh and other regional leagues is growing:
- Ali Uzair Mahmood recently received an offer from Adelaide Olympic FC in Australia.
- Abdullah Iqbal (National Captain) is currently attracting interest from major European clubs like Qarabag FK (Azerbaijan) and Kasimpasa (Turkey) following a standout season in Sweden.
Why This Move Matters
For years, Pakistani footballers have struggled with the lack of a consistent domestic league due to administrative issues. Joining international clubs allows them to:
- Maintain Match Fitness: Play in a professional 10-month season.
- Earn Professional Wages: Secure their financial futures outside the local departmental structure.
- Raise the National Profile: Success abroad encourages more international scouts to look toward Pakistan for raw talent.
Did You Know? Brothers Union FC has a history of developing young talent. The inclusion of the Pakistani trio is expected to significantly increase the club’s fan base within the Pakistani diaspora.
