Karachi Police Begin Strict Citywide Action Against Fake and Fancy Number Plates

Illegal Plates to Face Seizure as Enforcement Drive Expands Across Karachi

Karachi:
In a decisive move to strengthen traffic law enforcement and curb misuse of vehicle registrations, the Karachi Police have announced a strict citywide campaign against vehicles displaying fake, fancy, concealed, or non-standard number plates. The enforcement operation will take effect from Friday and will be implemented uniformly across all districts of the city.

Authorities say the initiative is aimed at restoring discipline on Karachi’s roads, improving vehicle identification, and closing loopholes that allow traffic violators to escape accountability.

Multi-Department Strategy Unveiled at Police Headquarters

The decision was announced during a media briefing at the Karachi Police Headquarters by Additional Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho, who was joined by senior officials from multiple civic and enforcement bodies.

Participants at the briefing included CPLC Chief Zubair Habib, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, and Director Excise and Motor Registration Shabana Baloch, reflecting a coordinated strategy involving policing, traffic management, and vehicle registration authorities.

Officials confirmed that the campaign will be carried out jointly to ensure accuracy, transparency, and fairness.

Automated Traffic Monitoring System Under Pressure

During the briefing, police officials highlighted the impact of Karachi’s automated traffic enforcement system, TRACS, which has significantly improved monitoring and reduced manual intervention in traffic policing.

According to authorities, while TRACS has increased compliance and transparency, recent assessments have revealed that some motorists are deliberately attempting to defeat the system by manipulating vehicle identification details.

Common Tricks Used to Avoid Digital Enforcement

Law enforcement officials reported a growing number of cases involving deliberate attempts to bypass e-challans. These include:

  • Use of counterfeit or unregistered number plates
  • Decorative or stylized plates that are difficult to read
  • Partial covering of registration numbers
  • Alteration of alphabets, digits, or plate dimensions

Such violations, officials warned, weaken digital enforcement systems and create obstacles in tracking repeat offenders or vehicles involved in criminal activity.

Citywide Checking, Spot Verification, and Seizures Planned

Under the new operation, district police units, in coordination with traffic police and the excise department, will conduct widespread checks at key locations across Karachi.

These will include major thoroughfares, busy commercial zones, entry and exit points, and residential sectors. Mobile verification teams will cross-check vehicle data with official excise records on the spot.

Vehicles found in violation will be impounded, and legal proceedings will be initiated under applicable traffic and criminal laws.

Due Process Assured Before Enforcement

Additional IG Odho emphasized that enforcement teams have been instructed to verify official registration data before taking action. No vehicle will be seized without proper confirmation from excise department records.

“This drive is about enforcing the law, not creating inconvenience for responsible citizens,” he stated, urging motorists to ensure their vehicles comply with legal standards.

Important Advisory for Motorists Awaiting Plates

For vehicle owners who have applied for official number plates but are still awaiting delivery, authorities advised carrying documentary proof or an official receipt issued by the excise department.

Failure to present valid documentation during checks may result in temporary confiscation until verification is completed.

Illegal Use of Government Green Plates Under Scrutiny

Police also warned against the unauthorized use of green government number plates, which are strictly restricted to official state vehicles.

Officials revealed that private misuse of such plates has increased in recent months, often to evade inspections. Strict legal action will be taken against violators without any exemption, authorities confirmed.

Public Support Seen as Key to Success

Karachi Police have called on citizens to cooperate fully with enforcement teams, comply with traffic laws, and report violations through authorized channels.

Officials reiterated that the operation is designed to improve safety, reduce lawlessness on the roads, and ensure equal application of the law for all road users.

Strengthening Road Safety and Accountability (Fancy Number Plates)

With Karachi’s traffic volume continuing to rise, authorities believe firm enforcement against illegal number plates is essential for effective policing and crime prevention.

By eliminating fake and Fancy Number Plates, police aim to enhance vehicle traceability, support automated enforcement, and create a more organized traffic environment across the city.

The Karachi Police have assured that the campaign will be conducted professionally, transparently, and without bias, as part of a broader effort to modernize traffic governance and improve public confidence.
